Wright Brothers National Memorial Hwy 158 - Milepost 8 - Kill Devil Hills Dedicated in 1932, the Wright Brothers National Monument celebrates the world's first controlled powered flight by the Wright Brothers on December 17, 1903. The Visitor Center features full-scale reproductions of the 1903 Powered Flyer. A centennial pavilion boasts an exhibit hall with permanent and special exhibits, including replicas of the 1902 Glider and the 1903 Flyer as well as a multipurpose auditorium. The grounds include historical markers of each attempted powered flight, a replica campsite and a 60-foot granite monument in the Wright Brother's honor on top of Big Kill Devil Hill, a 90-foot dune. Open 9 am - 6 pm in the summer, and 9 am - 5 pm the rest of the year. Cost is $4.00 per person. Individuals 16 and under are free. The Monument To A Century Of Flight Hwy 158 - Milepost 8 - Kill Devil Hills Created and dedicated during the First Flight Centennial in 2003, the monument depicts the human odyssey of flight in a single century--from earthbound into the mysteries of space. Its fourteen stainless steel, wing shaped pylons ascend in height from 10 to 20 feet and are organized in an orbit of 120 feet, symbolic of the length of the Wright Brothers' first historic flight. Jockey's Ridge State Park Hwy 158 - Milepost 12.5 - Nags Head This 426-acre park has the largest natural living sand dune on the East Coast. Two self-guided trails and nature programs are offered year-round. Hang gliding, kite flying, hiking, visitor's center, museum, picnic facilities and restrooms. Hours vary according to season. Bodie Island Lighthouse Hwy 12 - South Nags Head Bodie Island Lighthouse, encircled by two black and three white bands, stands 150 feet high. Light from the beacon can be seen for 19 miles over the ocean. Originally built in 1847, the lighthouse was rebuilt with improvements in 1859. In 1862 Confederate troops blew up the structure to prevent its use by the Union forces which occupied the Outer Banks. On October 1, 1872, the present tower was put into operation and is the third lighthouse built on the site at a cost of $140,000. The name Bodie was originally spelled Body and is still pronounced "body" (as in "a body of water"). Many sources say the island got its name because so many bodies washed ashore from shipwrecks. The lighthouse is not open for climbing, but the keeper's quarters have been restored and are now used as a visitor's center which is open year round. Nature Conservancy at Nags Head Woods 701 West Ocean Acres Drive - Milepost 9.5 - Kill Devil Hills Nags Head Woods is considered one of the best remaining examples of a mid-Atlantic maritime forest with deciduous hardwoods. This pine and hardwood forest harbors trees up to 500 years old and has an extensive system of dunes, interdune ponds, and wetlands. The preserve is an important nesting area for more than 50 species of birds, including green heron, red-shouldered hawk, ruby-throated hummingbird, and summer tanager. The freshwater ponds are inhabited by turtles and salamanders and support a variety of aquatic plant life, including the rare water violet. Open to the public from 10 am - 3 pm, Monday - Friday and on Saturday during the summer. Take Hwy 158 to Kill Devil Hills and turn west near Milepost 9.5 onto Ocean Acres Drive.
